The Third Academic Committee Meeting of the Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Research Center for Fiber Optic Sensing Technology was successfully held.

On the morning of April 27, 2024, the Third Academic Committee Meeting of the Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Research Center for Fiber Optic Sensing Technology (hereinafter referred to as the Research Center) was successfully held at the 301 Multi-function Hall of the Institute of Optoelectronics, Shenzhen University. Vice President Wang Yongcheng of Shenzhen University, Academician Zhu Ninghua of Nankai University, Academician Fan Dianyuan of Shenzhen University, Professor Chen Jianping of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor Jin Wei of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Professor Qiao Xueguang of Northwest University, Professor Zhao Jianlin of Northwestern Polytechnical University, Professor Pan Wei of Southwest Jiaotong University, Professor Lv Zhiwei of Hebei University of Technology, Professor Chen Genxiang of Minzu University of China, Professor Cai Xinxia of the Institute of Aerospace Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Dong Yi of Beijing Institute of Technology, Professor Chi Nan of Fudan University, Professor Yang Minghong of Wuhan University of Technology, Professor Xu Lijun of Beihang University, Professor Wang Pu of Beijing University of Technology, as well as Professor Qu Junle, Professor Liu Liwei, Professor Wang Yiping, Professor Liao Changrui, Professor He Jun, Professor Chen Yuhui of Shenzhen University, attended the meeting.

The first stage of the meeting was chaired by Professor Liu Liwei, Executive Vice Dean of the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering of Shenzhen University. Vice President Wang Yongcheng of Shenzhen University delivered a welcome speech and presented letters of appointment to all members of the Academic Committee.

The second stage of the meeting was chaired by Academician Zhu Ninghua, Director of the Academic Committee. Members of the Academic Committee listened to the work summary report of Professor Wang Yiping, Director of the Research Center, and three academic reports, including a report by Professor Liao Changrui on fiber end face functional integration technology, a report by Professor He Jun on sapphire fiber ultra-high temperature multi-physical field in-situ sensing technology, and a report by Associate Professor Liu Shen on fiber microcavity mechanics sensing technology.

The third stage of the meeting was chaired by Professor Wang Yiping, Director of the Research Center. Professor Wang Yiping led the experts to visit the Research Center and inspected demonstration systems such as fiber optic three-dimensional shape sensing system, distributed fiber optic two-dimensional temperature field sensing system, distributed fiber optic acoustic sensing system, fiber optic microphone, fiber FPI high-speed demodulation system, as well as femtosecond laser automatic preparation of large-scale fiber grating array sensors, 3D printed fiber end face micro-lens array, sapphire fiber high-temperature sensors, underwater burst pressure sensors, dispersion-compensated chirped fiber gratings, high-power laser fiber gratings, and other fiber optic sensors and core components, which aroused great interest among the experts and received high praise.

Finally, the members of the Academic Committee conducted in-depth discussions on the current development status of the Research Center and put forward suggestions for future development. They believed that the Research Center has distinct characteristics in its main research directions, significant achievements in platform construction, complete management systems, clean and tidy overall environment, and reasonable planning. In the next stage, the Research Center should make more use of platform resources, play a role of the platform, focus on basic scientific issues, and vigorously strengthen basic research. It should further refine its direction, avoid homogeneous development, specialize in characteristic directions, concentrate efforts to achieve major tasks, and strive for more and higher national awards. The Research Center should actively carry out the transformation of core technologies and the industrialization of scientific research achievements, and expand interaction and cooperation with enterprises. The Academic Committee believed that the Research Center has achieved significant results in platform construction, academic development, discipline construction, achievement transformation, and talent cultivation. It is suggested to further refine the research direction, combine with the national 14th Five-Year Plan and the industrial development needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to promote greater development of the discipline of optical engineering.

The Academic Committee meeting fully discussed the achievements of the Research Center over the past decade and put forward forward-looking and feasible valuable suggestions for the development planning of the Research Center. The Third Academic Committee Meeting of the Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Research Center for Fiber Optic Sensing Technology concluded successfully.
