Introduction to the Doctoral Student Special Project

The China Association for Science and Technology Young Science and Technology Talent Training Program Doctoral Student Special Project (formerly known as the “Young Talent Support Project”) is an initiative by CAST that integrates government and social resources to implement capability enhancement programs for a wide range of young science and technology personnel. The fundamental value pursuit is to cultivate and develop a large-scale team of young science and technology talents. The project adheres to the original mission of “educating people for the Party and nurturing talents for the country”. By utilizing the platform and resource advantages of the CAST organization, it aims to assist outstanding doctoral students in broadening their academic horizons, enhancing their innovation abilities, and helping selected candidates gain a deeper understanding of China's national conditions, expand their professional perspectives, and comprehend societal needs.

Profile of the Selected Candidate

Chen Gaiyuan is a 2024 PhD student at the College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Shenzhen University, with Professor Liu Yong as his mentor. During his graduate studies, he has conducted a series of research on the treatment and disposal of radioactive waste. To date, he has published a total of 9 SCI papers, including 6 as the first author in high-level journals such as the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering and Journal of Nuclear Materials. He has also been granted 4 national invention patents, including 2 where he is the first or second inventor. During his doctoral period, he has received honors such as the Shenzhen University 2024 Top Innovative Award - Special Prize and the 2025 Top Innovative Award - First Prize.
