From May 8 to 10, 2026, the 17th International Conference on Photonics and Optoelectronics (POEM 2026) was held at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. During the poster session of the Biophotonics specialty on the afternoon of May 8, a research team consisting of undergraduate students Wang Weikun and Shen Jingkang, along with graduate student Wang Jiedong from the Institute of Medical Photonics Innovation at the College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Shenzhen University, made a remarkable impact with their poster titled “Non-Destructive Detection of Peach Sugar Content Based on Near-Infrared Absorption”, winning the conference's “Best Poster Award”.

The award-winning project was led by undergraduate students Shen Jingkang, Wang Weikun, and Wen Tianhe, in collaboration with fellow undergraduates and graduate student Wang Jiedong. The team was guided by Professor Peng Xiao and supported by the Guangdong Province University Student Innovation Training Program project “Smart Eye on Peaches - Integrated Non-Destructive Sugar Content Detection Instrument”. The team independently developed a near-infrared non-destructive testing prototype and optimized the random forest algorithm, enabling rapid and accurate measurement of internal sugar content in peaches without causing damage. This innovative approach offers advantages such as high efficiency, reliable accuracy, and cost-effectiveness, making it highly applicable in the fields of fruit quality intelligent grading, origin tracing, and smart agriculture.
